Research Experience for Medical Students (REMS)

The REMS elective series offers a research experience exclusively for first-year medical students at UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

REMS Research and Dissemination Support

The School of Medicine & Health Sciences at the University of North Dakota recognizes the importance of research in medical training and its pivotal role in shaping the skills and perspectives of future physicians. In support of this vision, the Office of the Associate Dean of Research in the SMHS provides two streams of support for medical students and their research mentors participating in the REMS II/III elective series:

  1. Research Support: up to $1,000 per student for UND or UND-affiliated research mentors to help offset various research expenditures. These funds should be utilized during the summer elective period, with the allocation expiring at the end of the calendar year.
  2. Dissemination Support: up to $1,000 per student to support travel and publication expenses related to the dissemination of REMS research findings. Students are encouraged to request these funds before June 30 of the summer following their REMS II/III experience.

To qualify for Research Support:

  1. Research mentor must be UND Faculty or researchers affiliated with a SMHS clinical department
  2. Mentored 1 or more REMS students during the current REMS II/III elective period
  3. Incurred expenses related to research*

*approval of expenses beyond traditional “bench research” supplies need to be approved by the Director of Learner Research prior to request of funds

To qualify for Dissemination Support:

  1. Student must have been enrolled and completed REMSII/III the summer prior to request
  2. Student must be currently enrolled in SMHS medical school.
  3. Student must be first author on the presentation/publication.
  4. Meeting (presentation only) must be relevant to the field of research.
  5. Manuscripts (publication only) must be indexed in Medline.*
  6. Posters/Manuscripts must be peer-reviewed.
  7. Posters/Manuscripts must be accepted for presentation/publication.

*Exceptions may be considered

Requesting Support

To request research support, research mentors (or their designee) can work through their departmental administrator to pay for research expenditures using special fund, department and program numbers. These numbers will be provided to mentors by the Director of Learner Research, Sarah Sletten (sarah.sletten@UND.edu).

To request Dissemination Support, students should fill out the REMS Support Request Form. For questions, reach out to Nikki Voigt in the Office of the Associate Dean of Research in the School of Medicine & Health Sciences (nicole.voigt@UND.edu). Funds need to be requested before June 30 the summer following REMS II/III.
