REMS Research Support
The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences recognizes the importance of research in medical training and its pivotal role in shaping the skills and perspectives of future physicians. In support of this vision, the Office of Research Affairs provides financial support to medical students and their research mentors participating in the REMS II/III elective series.
Up to $2,000 per student is available to support expenses related to REMS research activities. These funds may be used at the discretion of the student and mentor to support any aspect of the research experience, including research supplies, travel to present project findings, or publication costs.
Funds should be utilized within one year of completing the REMS II/III elective period.
Eligibility
To qualify for REMS Research Support:
- The student must be currently enrolled in the SMHS medical program and have been enrolled in and completed REMS II/III the summer prior to the funding request.
- The meeting (for presentation requests) must be relevant to the students’ field of research. The student must be first author and accepted for presentation.
- Manuscripts (for publication requests) must be peer-reviewed and indexed in Medline.* The student must be first author.
- Research mentor must be UND Faculty (for research supply requests).
*Exceptions may be considered.
Requesting Support
Research Support for Travel & Publication
Students seeking financial support for research travel or publications must follow the updated approval process before making any financial commitments.
Step 1: Prior Approval (Required)
Before registering for conferences, booking flights, or incurring any expenses, students must obtain formal approval through the following two actions:
- SMHS Leave/Travel Request: Complete the request form located on the SMHS Website under the Logins dropdown found in the top banner.
- Excused Absence Request: Contact Brittany Haugen (brittany.haugen@und.edu) in the SMHS Research Affairs Office to obtain and submit this form.
Step 2: Consultation
To avoid reimbursement delays or potential denial of funds, you must connect with Brittany Haugen either by email or meeting prior to booking. She will verify that your plan aligns with current University and School policies.
Step 3: Funding Request & Documentation
Once preliminary approvals are in place, submit the REMS Support Request Form.
To request Research Support for supplies, research mentors (or their designee) can work through their departmental administrator to pay for research expenditures using special fund, department and program numbers. These numbers will be provided to mentors by the Director of Learner Research, Sarah Sletten (sarah.sletten@UND.edu).
