Research and Scholarly Activity
The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Internal Medicine Residency Program in Bismarck recognizes that research is a vital component of residency training and professional development.
Our program is committed to fostering a strong culture of inquiry, discovery, and academic growth—whether residents are pursuing subspecialty fellowships, hospitalist careers, or community-based practice.
Residents have numerous opportunities to engage in ongoing clinical and scholarly research with the support of our faculty. A notable example is Dr. Peter Kurniali, a core faculty member and practicing Hematologist and Oncologist, who leads and mentors residents in research related to oncology and hematologic diseases. Under his guidance, residents can participate in active projects, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and present their findings at regional and national conferences.
In addition to specialty-specific research, residents are encouraged to pursue scholarly work across a wide spectrum of interests including:
- Quality improvement (QI) and patient safety
- Health equity and disparities
- Population health and rural medicine
- Medical education and clinical case reports
Our program provides tremendous institutional support to ensure residents can turn their ideas into scholarly output. This includes:
- Faculty mentorship and collaboration
- Protected academic time
- Access to data and statistical support
- Guidance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes
- Editorial support for abstracts, posters, and manuscript preparation
- Funding support for travel to present at academic meetings
By creating an environment that values intellectual curiosity and academic excellence, our residency program empowers residents to become not only skilled clinicians but also contributors to the advancement of medical knowledge and innovation.
