Mission Statement and Aims
The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Internal Medicine Residency Program aims to educate, mentor, and develop physicians to provide excellent healthcare to the patients in our rural and local communities.
The care for our patients will be high quality, cost-effective, compassionate and personalized. This statement aligns with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences Purpose Statement: the primary purpose of (UND SMHS) is to educate physicians and other health professionals to enhance the quality of life in North Dakota.
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is designed to:

- Prepare residents with the knowledge, clinical skills, attitudes, and hands-on experiences necessary to provide high-quality, compassionate, and cost-effective care.
- Foster a supportive environment that promotes a strong quality of life for residents and their families, while cultivating a sustainable culture of wellness.
- Embrace and integrate technology, including telehealth, to expand access to care and improve patient outcomes.
- Offer residents the flexibility and support to pursue individualized career paths, whether in primary care, hospital medicine, or subspecialty training.
- Equip future physicians with the tools to recognize and address healthcare disparities and social determinants of health, and to advocate for systems that ensure ethical and equitable access to care for all patients.
