UND MLS Professional Year
The following information is intended to prepare students for the Professional Year. All incoming students are required to review all of the information. Information updated February 20, 2024.
Students are required to complete all components of the 12 month Professional Year:
- Summer Online Courses
- Fall On-Campus lectures and labs
- Spring Clinical Rotations
Pre-Summer Information
The following information should be used to help you complete your to-do list before the first day of summer courses on Monday, May 13, 2024.
University Admission and Program Requirements
Students must apply and be admitted to UND. Acceptance to the UND MLS program does not mean the student has been admitted to UND.
The application process to UND may take an extended period of time. Students MUST
BE ADMITTED by April 15, 2024.

Readmission
If the student has previously attended UND but did not enroll in course work for Spring 2024, the student will need to be readmitted.
Each student, upon admission to UND, is issued a UND email account. It is the student's responsibility to claim their NDUS.Identifier account.
All email correspondence from UND and the UND MLS program is through the UND or NDUS account. It is the student's responsibility to check it daily.
If assistance is needed, please utilize University IT.
All course content will be administered to students through Blackboard.
Access to Blackboard can be found at https://blackboard.und.edu. Students need to be registered in courses to have access in Blackboard. Courses become available in Blackboard the day they are scheduled to start.
Blackboard username and password is the same as the student's NDUS.Identifier.
Students will be given access to the MLS Community 24-25 on Blackboard approximately May 1, 2024. An announcement will be sent to your UND email when the MLS Community 24-25 site becomes available. The community site will provide the student with instructions of necessary tasks that need to be completed for the Professional Year.
All prerequisite courses required for the MLS summer practicum must be completed before May 13, 2024.
Proof of successful completion (a copy of student's unofficial transcript) must be submitted to the MLS Community 24-25 via Blackboard by June 1, 2024.
Course registration for summer and fall should be completed by April 21, 2024.

University ID & Living
For students who do not currently have a U Card, please do the following.
Order a University ID (U Card)
- Students must be registered for classes to be able to order a U Card. Please fill out this form to order one online. You will need your U Card when you come to campus in the fall.
- Must be ordered between May 1 and June 1.
- Students will be required to upload a digital photo and a government ID when ordering the U Card. Follow the specific instructions included in the form.
- U Cards will be mailed directly to students. Please ensure your address is correct in Campus Connection.

- Campus libraries and other campus services
Non-tuition Expenses
Students are responsible for all fees/bills for parking, ID cards, housing, or other miscellaneous services that they accrue from UND each semester.
Students are responsible for the payment of additional program related expenses throughout Professional Year.
Health Requirements
A physical examination is not required by the UND MLS program. However, a clinical site may require a physical exam.
According to the UND MLS policy, students must provide the program with proof of health insurance before entrance into the professional program.
In addition to health insurance, students are required to submit immunization records in two places:
- Directly to the UND Department of MLS by June 1, 2024 following these instructions.
- Student Health Services patient portal (for UND). The information that is uploaded and submitted to Student Health is kept confidential and in your record at the clinic. If you are unable to access the SHS patient portal please contact Student Health Services at 701.777.4500.
Textbooks and Course Material
Required textbooks will be available for purchase from the UND Bookstore or online.
You are encouraged to purchase textbooks as opposed to renting. The books, lecture notes, and assignments will be used throughout the entire professional program.

Online Summer Courses
Students will be required to participate in an online MLS orientation for the summer semester via Zoom.
Orientation will consist of faculty, staff, and student introductions and an overview of program policies, procedures, and technology used to complete coursework.
Orientation will be Monday, May 13 from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Central Time. The Zoom link will be available via email and/or the MLS Blackboard Community 24-25
site.
Each course is taught in a block (one class at a time).
Class times are typically from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time each day.
Detailed class schedule will be provided at the beginning of each class.
Dates of Online Summer Courses
May 13, 2024 to August 9, 2024
In accordance with the Department of MLS Standards of Professional Conduct and/or course policy, students are required to be in attendance during all scheduled hours of class. Note: missing one day of class in the summer practicum is equivalent to missing one week of class in a traditional semester.
If the student has a known scheduled event that requires an absence (i.e. in a wedding party), the instructor must be contacted prior to the beginning of the course.
Each instructor will determine how the absence affects the student’s final grade.
After the summer semester begins, in the case of an emergency, the student must notify the course instructor by email or phone.

You will need to print some documents and will need access to a printer/printing services.
Criminal Background Check Renewal
In accordance with Department of MLS policy, a criminal background check must be completed at the beginning of Professional Year.
A renewal of a student’s criminal background check must be completed between May 16
and May 31, 2024. Do not complete prior to May 16, 2024.
The cost for criminal background check renewal is approximately $45. The student is responsible for this cost.

Drug and Alcohol Screening
Any student may be subject to drug and/or alcohol screening as outlined in the SMHS Drug and Alcohol Screening and Education Program Policy. A positive drug/alcohol drug screen will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including immediate dismissal from the program. Fall On-Campus
Program Requirements
Students will be required to come on-campus for laboratory and lectures from August 19, 2024 to December 13, 2024.
Students need to be available from 9am to 5pm each day for face-to-face laboratory sessions, synchronous coursework, and/or asynchronous online coursework. Students will receive a more detailed schedule from the instructor of each course.

Orientation to the on-campus fall session will be Monday, August 19, 2024. Students will be required to attend this meeting in person.

Required textbooks for fall courses can be found on the Undergraduate Textbook List.
Students will be required to have a fluid resistant lab coat for all laboratory sessions. Lab coats are available to all UND MLS students through the UND MLS program.
Scientific Calculators will also be required for lab.
Specific dress code only applies for scheduled laboratory sessions. Students will be required to comply with the UND Department of MLS Laboratory Safety Standard.
Non-Academic Requirements
At the beginning of the fall on-campus laboratory session, students will be required to complete a colorblindness test to make them aware of alterations in their vision, if they have not already been in previous UND MLS courses.
Any student may be subject to drug and/or alcohol screening as outlined in the SMHS Drug and Alcohol Screening and Education Program Policy. A positive drug/alcohol drug screen will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including immediate dismissal from the program. Dates for on-campus TB testing will be announced closer to the fall semester.
Clinical affiliates require that students receive TB testing prior to being allowed to participate in a clinical rotation.
TB testing will be completed through a blood test called a T-Spot. UND MLS will coordinate the necessary testing in the fall semester for all students. Estimated cost of a T-Spot test is $80.

Students are responsible for arranging their own housing for the fall on-campus session.

Post Fall Semester Information
If students have an outstanding bill, UND will not allow registration or issue final transcripts for either the Fall 2024 and/or Spring 2025.
Mandatory attendance to Clinical Practicum Orientation will be required on December 13, 2024.
Some clinical affiliates may have site specific requirements that are an additional cost to the student. These may include:
- Drugs of Abuse Panel
- Minnesota Department of Health Background Check
- Wisconsin Care Givers Background Check
The clinical practicum is completed at a healthcare facility.
January 6--May 9, 2025
- Students will be provided a schedule by the clinical affiliate on the first day of the clinical rotation. Note the schedule is subject to change.
- Students are responsible for working on the bench each day within the assigned rotation.
- Students will also be assigned coursework to be completed outside of your assigned clinical hours. The clinical affiliate is not obligated to give students time to study. Students are to work on the bench during your clinical experience time and study in the evenings and weekends.
- The clinical rotation has two graded portions:
- The didactic grade is earned from quizzes and exams. Exams must be taken under the supervision of a proctor.
- The performance grade will be completed by the clinical affiliate and is converted into a grade. Performance evaluations are provided to the student prior to the rotation so the student is aware of how they will be graded.
The clinical practicum calendar does not follow the academic calendar published by UND. Students must follow the schedule provided by the clinical affiliate on the first day of the clinical rotation.
