M.S. in MLS Curriculum

Required Coursework

Students Seeking the Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (M.S. in MLS) degree at the University of North Dakota must satisfy all general requirements set forth by the School of Graduate Studies as well as particular requirements set forth by the Department of Medical Laboratory Science including:

A minimum of 33 credits of degree coursework including:

  • 9 Credits of foundation courses
  • 12 Credits of core courses
  • At least 12 credits of elective coursework
  • Successful completion of comprehensive examination(s) and an Independent Study that take place at the end of a student's program of study

Core Courses address the scientific content/theory related to the major testing areas in the medical laboratory. Core Courses from four separate content areas are required for degree completion, ensuring a rigorous and diverse course schedule that upholds the program's commitment to a generalist emphasis. At least 4 core courses (12 credits) are required.

Elective courses related to specialty areas - education, leadership, management, etc. are available for students to customize their degree to fit individual needs. A minimum of 12 credits are required.

Any core course taken beyond the 12 required core course credits may be counted as elective course credits.

Course Scheduling

Graduate MLS courses are offered in spring (January - May) and fall (August - December) semesters on the following scheduled rotation cycle:

Current COURSE OFFERING Schedule

Students typically take 3-4 years to complete the entire M.S. in MLS program, which means that each course will be available at least once during a student's tenure. Many M.S. in MLS graduate students are working professionally while taking courses and average 1-3 courses per semester (2-6) credits.

Course Registration

Students admitted to the M.S. in MLS program will have access to course registration information prior to each semester. The information will be available through the M.S. in MLS Graduate Community site in Blackboard.
