Pediatric Residency Program
Welcome to the Pediatric Residency Program at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
We are North Dakota’s first ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program. At our program, pediatrics is more than a specialty – it's a commitment to caring for children and families across the Northern Plains and training the next generation of pediatricians to serve rural and under-served communities.
Program Description
We are a community-based program in Fargo, North Dakota sponsored by the University of North Dakota in collaboration with Sanford Health as the clinical partner. Residents train at Sanford Medical Center, home to Sanford Children’s Hospital – a regional referral center serving North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Our team of general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists allows us to provide children with comprehensive care close to home, and our residents are exposed to both everyday pediatric care and complex, high-acuity cases. Our residents gain hands-on experience in our clinics, inpatient pediatric units, including a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and North Dakota’s only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center – ensuring graduates are prepared for any clinical setting.
To broaden clinical exposure, residents also rotate at partner institutions, including Adolescent Medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. These experiences provide residents the opportunity to train with board-certified pediatric specialists not available in the state of North Dakota and help residents develop confidence caring for diverse patient populations across multiple healthcare systems.
Our three-year program accepts 4 residents per year through the NRMP Match, and the intentionally small program size allows for close faculty mentorship, individualized learning, and strong resident camaraderie. From intern year through graduation, residents are treated as valued members of the healthcare team with increasing responsibility, autonomy, and teaching opportunities.
At the UND Pediatric Residency program, you’ll be supported, challenged, and inspired. Begin your journey here – where you’ll grow into a confident and compassionate pediatrician ready to care for children in diverse communities.
