Pediatric Residency Program
The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Pediatric Residency is ACGME accredited as of July 2023 with their first residents in July 2024.
UND's Department of Pediatrics is excited to announce its partnership with Sanford Health for North Dakota's first Pediatric Residency, a three-year residency program. The program’s primary site will be Sanford Medical Center Fargo, N.D., where Sanford's Children’s Hospital is located, and its affiliated hospitals and clinics in the Fargo metro region.
This program will participate in the National Residency Matching program and accept four residents per year.
Residents will complete the majority of their rotations in Fargo with the exception of Adolescent Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The Adolescent Medicine rotation consists of two weeks at the University of Minnesota/Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis, Minn., during residents' PGY-2 year. The Pediatric Emergency Medicine rotations consists of one month at Children’s in Minnesota during residents' PGY-2 year. Our faculty are personable, approachable, and eager to teach, and our residents are an integral part of the health team and play crucial roles in teaching medical students and other residents.
Although we are a new program, our faculty has extensive experience in teaching residents from other programs, such as Family Medicine and UND medical students on rotation.
The Pediatric Residency devotes an afternoon every other week for didactic lectures, including Grand Rounds events, clinical and diagnostic reasoning, journal clubs, and clinical science. Residents are free of clinical duty during these hours to optimize the learning experiences.
Sanford Medical Center in Fargo is a tertiary referral center for the tri-state area. With a catchment area of 1.5 million people, we have a diverse patient population. Our medical school has the resources in place to ensure that our residents have enriched, comprehensive residency training. Our team works very closely with other departments, including psychiatry, radiology, and family medicine. Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo is the only Level 2 Pediatric Trauma unit in North Dakota. The NICU at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo is a Level 3 NICU and our PICU cares for critically ill medical and surgical patients.
We are devoted to ensuring that our residents enjoy their learning experience during residency. Our training program will make certain that our residents become well-rounded physicians and board-certified pediatricians. We appreciate your time and interest.
