ANAMS Chapter Reimagined at UND SMHS

Student Group Advocates for American Indian/Alaska Native Student Opportunities.

class of 2023 ANAMS leadership

ANAMS (Association of Native American Medical Students) is a national organization of medical student-led chapters whose purpose is to increase recruitment, retention, and successful completion of graduate medical education by Alaska Native and American Indian students. The organization also promotes the education of all future medical providers on Native health issues.

UND SMHS Medical Students Alexandria McLearen and Olivia Harris started a UND chapter in 2019 and look forward to using the group's leadership, access, and opportunities to support other American Indian and Alaska Native medical students. The UND chapter already has connected more than 18 Indians Into Medicine (INMED) students with national ANAMS membership, begun a mentorship program matching ANAMS members with AN/AI pre-med students at UND, and sponsored guest lecturers, including Dr. Mary Owen for Native American Heritage Month.  Dr. Owen is an Alaska Native physician and Native Health Researcher.
