Working from Home FAQs
I don’t have a UND-owned laptop. What are my options?
- Contact your supervisor and arrange to take your desktop home.
- Use your personal computer at home. Make sure you store documents on your OneDrive or network drive. A limited number of laptops are available for checkout thanks to the INMED program.
- Contact its@med.UND.edu
My desktop won’t connect to my home Wi-Fi. What do I need to do?
University-owned desktop computers do not have Wi-Fi chips. You will need to use an ethernet cable to connect to your router or purchase a USB Wi-Fi adapter.
Do I need to be an administrator on my computer?
Yes. If you find you are not an administrator, contact its@med.UND.edu.
Is my internet sufficient to work from home?
Run a speed test (speedtest.net) to determine your network speed. Contact your service provider for assistance.
Recommended Download/Upload speeds
One person - 10Mbs Down/5Mbps Up: Video meeting, uploading/downloading large documents
Two to three people - 25Mbs+ Down/10Mbps Up: Video Meeting or streaming services at the same time.
What if my Wi-Fi suddenly stops working?
Shut off your router. Wait five minutes before turning it on again.
My phone/laptop/tablet won’t connect to Wi-Fi, even though my other devices are working.
Turn off the device. Wait a minute and turn it back on.
How would I increase my home Wi-Fi signal?
- Check your router placement. Is it centrally located and away from obstacles?
- Disconnect unnecessary devices.
- Check if updates are available for your router. An updated and protected router performs best.
- Upgrade your internet package.
If approved by your supervisor, you may be able to receive reimbursement for cell phone and/or hot spot usage during this time. Start by filling out the Additional/Reduce Pay Request form, followed by the University Owned Mobile Device and Technology Allowance Authorization Form.
