I chose the UND TY program for its welcoming community, diversity, and opportunities for public service. My advanced program is neurology, and I absolutely love building longitudinal physician-patient relationships in the outpatient setting! 

Medical and Professional Interests: After the TY program, I will continue with the Sanford Neurology program. I am particularly interested in ALS and would love to pursue a career in neuromuscular medicine.

I chose the UND TY program because of the collaborative, welcoming community I experienced during my interview day. Additionally, training in this program allows my family to remain close to our extended family while also giving me the opportunity to prepare for my advanced program through rotations that utilize point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and image-guided interventional procedures.

Medical and Professional Interests: Mentorship has been a passion of mine throughout my medical training, and I am excited to contribute to the outstanding teaching environment and culture at UND. After completing my transitional year at UND, I will begin diagnostic radiology residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. My long-term goal is to complete a fellowship and ultimately practice in the Midwest in a role that allows me to work with and teach medical students and residents.

Advanced Specialty: Dermatology

I chose the UND Transitional Year program because I had the privilege of training with many of the attendings over the past two years in medical school and experienced firsthand the program’s unmatched learning environment and strong team atmosphere. I was especially drawn to the camaraderie between TY interns and Internal Medicine residents, which creates a truly supportive culture.

Medical and Professional Interests: My greatest passion in medicine is serving rural communities, with a particular interest in Dermatology. Training in North Dakota has reinforced how vital rural physicians are, especially in areas with limited access to specialty care. As a future dermatologist, I hope to give back by improving access and providing care to rural communities. I plan to practice in the Midwest after residency, with a focus on serving rural communities through outreach clinics. I also have a strong interest in specializing in pediatric dermatology and hope to incorporate this into my future practice.

 

Delton Gabel, M.D.

I chose the UND TY program because it allows me to remain close to my family. As a Fargo native who rotated here as a medical student, I experienced firsthand the attendings' passion and enthusiasm for guiding trainees to become excellent physicians. I was also impressed by the strong camaraderie among residents and the consistently positive feedback they shared about the program. Additionally, the program’s emphasis on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) aligns with my interest in global health outreach, where access to advanced imaging is often limited, and POCUS serves as a powerful, portable tool to guide diagnosis and management in real time.

Medical and Professional Interests: I am passionate about working in resource-limited settings, including rural and international environments. Through my experiences in smaller North Dakota communities and medical mission work in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, I have seen the critical role healthcare workers play in delivering care and the importance of education and training in supporting sustainable, high-quality healthcare. I plan to pursue a career as an ophthalmologist in an underserved area, with opportunities to teach and mentor students in the field. Additionally, I hope to become an FAA Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), combining my interest in aviation with medicine to support pilots in obtaining and maintaining their medical certification.

 

Connor Ott, M.D.

I chose the UND TY program because of Sanford's excellent reputation, the number of electives offered, and the supportive training environment. Additionally, several members of my extended family live in North Dakota, so it is a familiar place for me. I'm passionate about improving follow up rates for breast and lung cancer screening.

Medical and Professional Interests: Following my diagnostic radiology residency at the Mayo Clinic, I plan to practice in the Midwest, likely specializing in either musculoskeletal or breast radiology.

I chose the UND TY program because of the upbeat and close-knit environment I saw during the interviews. The smaller city combined with what the program has to offer in its curriculum convinced me that it had everything that I was looking for.

Medical and Professional Interests: I hope to further my education in Neurology through a fellowship and eventually a teaching position that allows me to teach the next generation of burgeoning medical students or residents in a welcoming educational environment.

Choosing a program is about finding the right fit, and for me, that moment happened on Interview Day. Meeting the faculty and residents made it clear that UND offers something rare: the high-level educational resources of a major university combined with a genuine, tight-knit community. I wanted to train in an environment where people support one another as much as they challenge one another.

Medical and Professional Interests: In medicine, I am fascinated by the nervous system and the profound impact it has on our daily lives. We often take for granted the complex processes that allow us to move and interact with the world; it is often only when the nervous system is affected that we realize how vital it is to our independence and identity. I am passionate about helping patients navigate these challenges and regaining their quality of life. Following my residency, I plan to pursue a fellowship in a specialized field of neurology. During my training, I am eager to explore the full breadth of what the nervous system has to offer. My goal is to use my residency to discover where I can make the greatest impact before selecting a sub-specialization for my future practice.

Brailyn Weber, M.D.

I chose the UND TY program because of the close proximity to home and family, as well as the wonderful experiences I had rotating with UND residents and faculty during medical school.

Medical and Professional Interests: In medicine, I am passionate about dermatology—particularly contact dermatitis and patch testing—as well as improving access to care in rural communities. I also enjoy staying actively involved in medical education and mentoring. After residency, I hope to return home to North Dakota to practice dermatology with an emphasis on rural outreach and patch testing. I also plan to stay involved with teaching and mentoring medical students and residents.
