How to Apply
We are delighted with your interest in our Transitional Year (TY) Residency Training Program at UND.
The Transitional Year Residency Program is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) fully accredited, integrated program of the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences, which is conducted almost exclusively at Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D. The program accepts eight residents annually.
The UND Transitional Year Program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and the Electronic Residency Applications Service (ERAS) application system. Our program can be located in ERAS by entering our Program Number 9993700086 in your program search.
Applications will only be accepted electronically through ERAS from September 6, 2023 through November 30, 2023. All applicants should have completed and passed USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 prior to the application deadline. We also require USMLE Step 2/COMLEX Level 2 results to be uploaded into ERAS by February 15, 2024, in order to be ranked by our program.
In addition, the following are required to be present by the application deadline for each application to be considered complete:
- Medical school transcript
- Curriculum vitae
- Copy of medical school diploma (if graduated)
- Date of graduation--no requirement but prefer within the past 3 years and must be accompanied by documentation of all activities since date of medical school graduation
- Two letters of recommendation
- Copies of USMLE/COMLEX scores – we do prefer candidates who have passed the USMLE/COMLEX Step 1 and Step 2 exams on the first attempt
- Personal statement
Graduates of medical schools disapproved by the North Dakota Board of Medicine will not be considered. Also, please note that we do not sponsor visas.
Applications are initially evaluated and graded based on several criteria including medical school performance, USMLE/COMLEX scores, recommendation letters, and personal statement.
If your application meets the UND Transitional Year Residency Program application criteria, you will be considered for an interview. Selected candidates will be notified by email with an invitation to interview. Typically, interviews are scheduled between mid-October and mid-December. All interviews will be conducted virtually through Thalamus.
