Faculty Residency

Accelerate your professional development by participating in UND’s Faculty Residency Program.

The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Faculty Residency is currently in the developmental phase of the accreditation process; however, is not yet accredited by the America Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education as a post-professional non-clinical residency program for faculty.

Our Mission:

Develop well-prepared and competent faculty by providing an innovative curriculum and mentoring in a supportive environment that fosters excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship in academia while preparing excellent future healthcare providers.

Our Goals:

  • Transform residents into faculty who can meet the requirements of the institution and accreditation to include teaching, service, scholarship, and governance. (Participant Outcomes)
  • Produce well-prepared faculty to meet current and future needs and demands for PT education programs. (Participant Outcomes)
  • Provide resident with high-quality faculty residency curriculum and programming per the Faculty DRP. (Program Effectiveness)
  • The residency program supports the mission of the sponsoring organization. (Program Effectiveness)
  • Resident demonstrates professional roles and responsibilities. (Program Effectiveness)
  • UND Faculty Residency will maintain sustainability. (Program Sustainability)
  • UND Faculty Residency will maintain ABPTRFE accreditation. (Program Sustainability)
  • The program will become a nationally recognized leader in faculty physical therapy residency education (Program Sustainability)

Residency Outcomes:

  • The resident will demonstrate professionalism in communication, instruction, and collaboration.
  • The resident will demonstrate effective teaching and communication with peers and students
  • The resident will demonstrate competency in scholarship as it pertains to a professional physical therapy program
  • The resident will demonstrate skills of leadership and service at the departmental, university, local, state, or national level
  • Resident will demonstrate competence in governance as it pertains to the university, School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and professional physical therapy program

Resident will anticipate and respond to the changing demands of higher education, PT education programs, health care, and society

Residency Information:

Credentialing: The residency program is in the developmental stage.  UND’s Faculty Residency is currently not accredited by ABPTRFE. UND Faculty Residency follows APTA guidelines for credentialing.

Length of Residency: 24-Months

Entrance Date: July 1 of the application year

Tuition: NONE

Salary: Resident will be a paid employee of UND and will be reimbursed approximately 70-80% of the average starting salary in the region.

Benefits: The UND Faculty Resident will receive malpractice and health insurance benefits via UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Be a graduate of a CAPTE-accredited physical therapy program
  2. Be licensed to practice physical therapy in the state of North Dakota by the start of the residency year
  3. Be a practicing physical therapy a minimum of 5 years
  4. Be an active member of the APTA in good standing.
  5. Have current CPR/AED certification.
  6. Submit completed application by program deadline, including:
    1. Professional Education
    2. Post-graduate Continuing Education
    3. Work Experience (which should include type of facility, common types of disorders treated, and percentage of time as FTE)
    4. Certifications/specializations
    5. Professional association affiliations and activities
    6. Honors/Awards
    7. Presentations and/or Publications
    8. Three letters of reference
    9. Admission Essay
      1. The applicant's goals and expectations during the residency
      2. Personal and professional strengths and weaknesses
      3. Why you desire to complete a faculty residency
      4. How you will use this residency to benefit the community and your profession
      5. Short and long term personal and professional goals

Admission Requirements/Application:

Applicants must apply via RF-PTCAS.

Application Deadline: January 1

Admission Decision Date: April 1

  2. Postgraduate continuing education (if applicable)
  3. Work experience (which should include type of facility, common types of disorders treated, and percentage of time as FTE)
  4.  Certifications / specializations
  5.  Professional association affiliations and activities
  6. Honors and awards
  7.  Presentations and public
  1. Professional essay (2-3 pages) including:
    1. The applicant's goals and expectations during the residency
    2. Personal and professional strengths and weaknesses
    3. Why you desire to complete a sports residency
    4. How you will use this residency to benefit the community and your profession
    5. Short and long term personal and professional goals

  2. Three letters of reference

    Following the application process, the admission committee will determine who will be invited for a formal interview. If accepted into the UND Faculty Residency, the applicant must have a criminal background check completed and must be a licensed Physical Therapist in the state of North Dakota.
