AI Committees
SMHS formed its AI Committee (AIC) to help the School respond strategically and responsibly to AI in education and research. Seven advisory committees assist AIC in its work.
The AI Committee (AIC) charge
- Advise the SMHS on the integration of AI to meet the mission of the school, in alignment with strategic planning.
- Promote responsible, discipline-aware adoption of AI in curricula and pedagogy, helping faculty, staff, and leadership to design effective learning and assessment at the individual student level and across entire programs and to ensure students are ready for the AI-enabled health care workforce.
- Promote the safe, rigorous, and innovative use of AI in biomedical, clinical, and population health research across the SMHS by developing recommendations, resources, and coordination mechanisms that promote high-quality and responsible research practice.
- Center learner voices in SMHS AI practices, identify learner needs, promote AI literacy and continuing-education opportunities, and advise on equitable, inclusive practices in classrooms and services.
- Advise educators, curriculum designers, and program personnel on the use of AI-based clinical decision making and documentation tools by learners and promote pre-clinical alignment for preparation in AI utilization in the clinical services and patient care curricular areas.
- Provide practical guidance and recommend policy on academic integrity, data privacy, accessibility, security, and compliance as they relate to the practical application and development of AI tools in healthcare and healthcare education that reflect the diversity of the SMHS programs and units.
- Promote AI work that places humans at the center of AI practice to advance human well-being, equity, and accountability by operationalizing guiding principles (e.g., transparency, safety, explainability, UX) into teaching, research, and services.
- Develop recommendations and advocate for SMHS AI-related data governance structure and physical infrastructure that is up-to-date, secure, and accessible to support all of the above.
- Advocate for resources needed to achieve its charge.
- Appoint advisory committees as defined below. These advisory committees shall assist the AIC in developing recommendations to FC and SMHS leadership regarding AI in support of the full mission of the school – education, discovery, and service.

Charge: The SMHS Office of Learning Innovation promotes responsible adoption of AI in curricula and pedagogy so students are prepared for the AI-enabled healthcare workforce, educators can integrate AI in to promote critical thinking and improve learning outcomes for all students, and students can use AI safely and wisely as a learning and professional tool.

Charge: The Research and Development (R&D) subgroup supports the responsible, rigorous, and innovative use of artificial intelligence in biomedical, clinical, and population health research across the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences. As part of the SMHS Working Group on AI, the R&D group plays a central role in ensuring that AI-enabled research advances scientific discovery while meeting institutional, ethical, and regulatory expectations for safety, transparency, and reproducibility.

Charge: The Policy & Guidance Subgroup develops clear, mission-aligned principles, standards, and lifecycle guidance for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) across the School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS). The subgroup addresses the AI lifecycle—from tool selection and evaluation to deployment, monitoring, and retirement—while avoiding duplication of existing institutional policies and procedures.

Charge: The Ethics & Human-Centered Computing (EHCC) workgroup promotes AI work at SMHS that places humans and ethical consideration at the center of AI practice. It aims to promote human well-being, equity, and accountability by translating guiding principles (e.g. transparency, safety, explainability, user experience) into practice across teaching, research, and services.

Charge: The DGI Subgroup advances secure, accessible, and modern AI data governance and infrastructure for SMHS. Through cross‑institutional collaboration, it aligns AI efforts in teaching, learning, research, and development while promoting responsible, human‑supervised practices that reduce bias, uphold data integrity, and support SMHS and UND AI Hub priorities.

Charge: The Clinical Services and Patient Care (CSPC) studies the intersection of AI and healthcare across healthcare education, and surveys AI use in clinical patient care settings such as for clinical documentation and decision-making. The CSPC advises SMHS educators on the use of AI-based tools by learners and to promote pre-clinical curriculum alignment for AI use in the healthcare workforce.
