Along with UND's Co.AI, the SMHS offers faculty, staff, and students the following resources when engaging AI at UND.

SMHS Policy 1.5: Use of Artificial Intelligence for Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship

"Faculty, staff, fellows, residents, and students of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine
and Health Sciences (UND SMHS) may use any Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool provided
they only enter public data in the process of doing so, and when the AI tool being used is not
otherwise expressly prohibited by NDUS or UND. When using AI for assigned coursework, students
must check with the responsible faculty and comply with any additional requirements regarding the
use of AI for coursework...."

Secure AI Purchase Procedure for SMHS 

UND has non-standard IT Software Request Forms on file for three Generative Pretrained Transformers (GPTs): Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and OpenAI ChatGPT. 

UND funds may be used to purchase the paid versions of these tools which are considered secure/protected versions of GPTs that are in compliance with the UND SMHS AI Policy. 

These tools may therefore be used for “public data” and may not be used for private or restricted data (IP, FERPA, HIPAA, etc.). 

These tools do not retain, sell, distribute, share, or use the data entered by the user to train their models. 

Purchasing one of these tools requires the following process: 

1. Verify permission for AI use by your supervisor. 
2. Verify funding to purchase the AI tool. 
3. Submit a “Tech Support Ticket” through the SMHS Technology Resources page. 

• • For the ticket “IT Service Category,” select “Applications and Software.”  
  • Specify the tool you wish to purchase (Claude, Copilot, ChatGPT). 
  • Indicate that your use will be for public data only.
    • If you intend to use private or restricted information, submit a non-standard IT request form before submitting a Tech Support Ticket.

SMHS Technology Resources will contact you and/or submit a request to main campus on your behalf.
