Campus Closure
Inclement Weather Policy
The UND Southeast Campus Medical Education Center (MEC) follows NDSU’s lead for weather related facility closures or local emergencies (i.e, weather warnings or flooding). If NDSU closes, no in-person classes are held within the MEC facility. However, virtual experiences may continue at the discretion of each departmental administrative leadership team with permissions from the Senior Associate Dean for Medicine & Research. Unless otherwise designated by departmental leadership, there will not be support staff present in the facility.
Students, residents, and fellows are expected to follow the facility emergency closure policy for the facility in which they are working (Essentia, Sanford, VA, other clinics/offices).
Students are notified of the general policy during orientation.
Students are expected to be aware of NDSU closures through general media announcements.
Fargo Flood Policy
This policy was created in 2009-'10 when the City of Fargo faced a serious flood event.
In order for UND Southeast Campus employees, learners, and faculty to be better prepared should we again face a serious flooding event in the Fargo area, administration would like you to review the following protocols, and have discussions within your departments should flooding events cause the closure of one or more of our local hospitals, or our medical education center facility.
General Expectations
Departments will have initial discussions with students and residents at one of their weekly meetings in the near future and notify the campus office once the meeting has been completed. At the meeting, emergency contact numbers should be gathered and provided for both the learners and for the faculty, staff and administrators.
The Medical Education Center will close only if the Fargo VA Health System faces evacuation and closure. Otherwise, it is expected that the facility will be staffed and open for operation. Departments should follow university policy on leave.
Students are expected to continue day-to-day activities on required rotations. Graduation requirements including time on rotations must be met.
Hospital Closure
In the unfortunate event that one of our local hospitals or teaching sites needs to evacuate, departments should work to reschedule learners to an alternative site if possible. Hospital emergency protocol should be followed.
Southeast Campus closure
In the event that the Fargo VA Health System should have to evacuate, which would also force the evacuation of the Southeast Campus, departments will cancel all lectures, departmental exams, meetings, and work to reschedule when possible and as necessary.
The campus office will work to arrange an alternative site for NBME shelf exams should the Office be closed on an exam proctoring date.
Departments should develop a written plan for the need to evacuate furniture, files, computers, etc., from the first floor of the Medical Education Center, should conditions necessitate. UND Facilities is prepared with little notice to bring a crew to Fargo to move the necessary equipment and files.
