Program Description

The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Neurology Residency in Fargo, N.D., is a four-year categorical program. We participate in the National Residency Matching Program and accept three residents per year. Since our program is categorical, residents who match with our program will automatically be granted preliminary positions in our Transitional Year Residency Program. Fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, our residency program is based out of Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D. The director of the program is Jau-Shin Lou, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A.

The Department of Neurology utilizes Sanford Health, Fargo, N.D., Sanford Health, Sioux Falls, S.D., and the Fargo VA Health Care System for its training sites. Residents will have a majority of their rotations at Sanford Health in Fargo, with the option of doing a three-month pediatric neurology rotation at the Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Located in the upper Midwest, Fargo is home to North Dakota's newest state-of-the-art academic Medical Center. The Sanford Medical Center Fargo features a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Center of Excellence in Multiple Sclerosis, Center of Excellence in Huntington’s Disease, four-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and an Endowed Parkinson Disease Research Laboratory.

Program Aims

The Aims of the Neurology Residency Program at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences are:

To have residents prepared for independent practice at the end of residency training and become Board Certified Neurologist.
To reduce the extreme workforce shortage of Neurologist by creating a pipeline to serve the people of the Dakotas and the adjacent regions served by our clinical partners.
To provide an environment that supports life balance, healthy families, and community connections for our residents.
To tailor individual residents’ educational goals on future career goals, including sub-specialty fellowships, through research and leadership opportunities.
To promote collegial and mentor relationships between residents and faculty.
To advance inter-disciplinary and inter-professional team collaborations.
To prepare residents to practice compassionate, patient-centered care in a variety of sub-specialty settings.
To produce graduates to be engaged and passionate about patient safety and quality improvement.
