Clinical Rotations

Required Clinical Rotations and Other Learning Experiences

The curriculum for the Internal Medicine Residency Program of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences is designed to meet program accreditation standards (ACGME Program Requirements for Residency Education in Internal Medicine effective July 1, 2022) and board certification requirements for graduates (American Board of Internal Medicine Policies & Procedures for Certification effective February 2022). 

The requirements state that residents’ clinical experiences must include:

  1. At least 1/3 of the residency training time in the ambulatory setting and 1/3 in the inpatient setting
  2. Required critical care rotations, which cannot be fewer than three blocks nor more than six blocks
  3. Exposure to each of the internal medicine subspecialties and neurology
  4. An assignment in geriatric medicine
  5. Opportunities for experience in psychiatry, allergy/immunology, emergency medicine,  medical ophthalmology, office gynecology, otorhinolaryngology, non-operative orthopedics, palliative medicine, sleep medicine and rehabilitation medicine
  6. Opportunities to demonstrate competence in the performance of procedures listed by the ABIM as requiring only knowledge and interpretation
  7. A longitudinal continuity experience with the resident serving as the primary physician for a panel of patients; this experience must include a minimum of 130 distinct half-day outpatient sessions

Required Clinical Rotations

The following clinical rotations are required (excluding PGY-4):

  1. Five blocks Inpatient Internal Medicine (Sanford )
  2. One block Critical Care Medicine (Sanford)
  3. One block Cardiology (Sanford)
  4. One block (2 half-blocks) Night Float (Sanford)
  5. One block Sanford Ambulatory (Sanford)
  6. One block Quality & Safety (Sanford)

  1. Three blocks Inpatient Internal Medicine (Sanford)
  2. One block Critical Care Medicine (Sanford)
  3. One block Cardiology (Sanford)
  4. One block (2 half-blocks) Night Float (Sanford)
  5. One block VA Subspecialties (VA)
  6. Half-block Women’s Health (Sanford)

  1. Three blocks Inpatient Internal Medicine (Sanford)
  2. One block Critical Care Medicine (Sanford)
  3. One block Cardiology (Sanford)
  4. Half-block Night Float (Sanford)
  5. One block Community Medicine (Sanford or other sites by special arrangement)
  6. Any required rotations not completed during PGY-1 or PGY-2 years

Chief Resident/Clinical Faculty

- Geared towards academia and leadership.

- Single position.

Continuity Clinic

Our resident continuity clinic is located at our Broadway clinic downtown Fargo. The clinic serves a diverse patient population from varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Residents are assigned to a clinic team made up of a first year, second year, and third year resident. Residents care for a panel of patients longitudinally throughout their three years. For academic year 2022-2023, the schedule will include a two week period of time every four to six weeks dedicated to ambulatory medicine, including resident continuity clinic.
