Services

The Mass Spectrometry lab is mainly focused on small molecule research (up to 4,000 Da).

Services

  • Developing sample preparation protocols
  • Training users for sample preparation
  • Developing LC-MS, GC-MS, or direct infusion-MS methods
  • Performing M.S. analyses for the users
  • Developing the quantification method, and also developing alternative approaches for data analysis and interpretation (e.g.: metabolite ID, structure determination, metabolomic profiling)
  • Training users to use the quantification or other developed methods for data analysis

Example Analyses

  • Quantitative Analysis of Small Molecules by UPLC or HPLC Coupled with Tandem Mass Spectrometry
    • Bioactive lipids
      • Prostaglandin profiling (COX products)
      • Products of lipid peroxidation (isoprostanes)
      • Hydroxy-Fatty Acids profiling including resolvins (LOX and P450 products)
    • Hydroxycholesterol quantification (Link 1, Link 2)
    • Carbohydrates
    • Nucleotides and nucleosides (adenosine, DNA modifications)
    • Lipid profiling
    • HNE (products of fatty acid peroxidation)
  • Qualitative Analysis of Small Molecules by Direct Infusion or UPLC Analysis Coupled with Tandem Mass Spectrometry
    • Structure and elemental composition prediction using high resolution accurate mass analysis
  • Metabolomics (comparison of metabolites between different experimental groups e.g. wild-type and genetically modified, control and treated)
  • Drug Metabolism (determination of molecule biotransformations)
  • Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Small Volatile Molecules Using GC/MS with Various Ionizations techniques, e.g., EI, NICI, CI.

Operation

We are using two models of operation:

  • Full Service: The Core Facility provides full service for the above analyses with the exception of LC method development, sample extraction, sample preparation, and data analysis that may be available through collaboration.
  • Self Service: Work-in users are allowed. The training of work-in users is provided by the Core Facility Personnel. Training is required to ensure protection of instruments and optimization of results. The training is scheduled on an individual basis.
