Interprofessional Health Care Course

The focus of the course is to learn about the role of other healthcare professionals and how to interact as a healthcare team. Eight professions collaborate in the course including: communication and sciences disorders, counseling psychology, medicine, nursing, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and social work. Each semester two five-week sessions are held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The small groups, consisting of 10 to 14 students from the various professions, meet at the School of Medicine & Health Sciences. The 1-credit course is offered pass/fail.

Course Details

This course is offered two times per semester as five weekly sessions.

Each session consists of seven to ten groups with 10 to 14 students per group. Groups meet at the School of Medicine & Health Sciences. A variety of interactive large group and small group activities are used to promote team building and communication between health science professions.

The course objectives include:

• Apply knowledge and perspectives of health professions in team discussions about patient/client care situations.
• Apply group skills in case management approaches.
• Demonstrate patient/client-centered approach in decision-making as an interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrate ability to reflect about team experiences and feedback.
• Identify sources of potential error and consequences to health care delivery.

Team STEPPS

The IPHC course utilizes TeamSTEPPS concepts as a framework for application of team communication skills in small groups.
