Nookala Awarded R21 NIH Grant
Suba Nookala, Ph.D. assistant professor with the Department of Biomedical Sciences was awarded a two-year $387,750 R21 grant through the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the role of IgA-biome in intestinal dysbiosis and brain changes in Alzheimer’s disease. The project seeks a new direction in the understanding of a major mechanism underlying the gut-brain axis in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Nookala’s project will determine whether longitudinal changes in fecal IgA coated bacteria correlate with AD related brain changes, functional role of IgA biome, and identify IgA-biome patterns that can be potential diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
