Center for Rural Health announces 2018 Native Elder Abuse Innovation Award recipients
GRAND FORKS, N.D.—Eight tribes from eight states have been awarded a total of $150,000 from the Native Indigenous Elder Justice Initiative (NIEJI) Innovation Program to address elder abuse in their communities. NIEJI is part of the Center for Rural Health (CRH) at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences. The CRH works with tribal communities to help improve the health and well-being of American Indians. The grants are funded by an award from the Administration for Community Living.
The following tribes were awarded one-year funding:
- The Knik Tribe of Alaska garnered $19,000 for the project Rural Alaska Elder Abuse Awareness and Interventions
- The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa of Michigan were awarded $20,000 for the project Elder Abuse Awareness and Education
- The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin secured $19,000 for the project Preventing the Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of Oneida Elders
- The Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona was awarded $18,000 for the Pascua Yaqui Community Elder Abuse Education & Outreach Project
- The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of North Dakota received $19,998 for the project Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Elderly Protection Services
- The White Earth Band of Chippewa of Minnesota earned $19,000 for the White Earth Elder Wellness Program
- The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes of Oklahoma were awarded $15,002 for the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Elder Abuse Protection Program
- The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska garnered $20,000 for the project Family Group Decision Making: A HoChunk Model

Our programs serve people within the state, region, and nation. We are designated as the North Dakota State Office of Rural Health, a federal-state partnership that helps rural communities build their health care services through collaborations and initiatives with a wide range of partners across the state.
