The learning strategist at the School of Medicine & Health Sciences' Office of Student Success & Well-Being works with students to develop effective learning strategies, strengthen academic skills, and build confidence in their ability to succeed. Whether students are looking to improve time management, prepare for exams, refine study habits, or enhance their overall learning approach, individualized support is available to help them achieve their academic goals.

Valeria Becker is a seasoned Learning Strategist with over 25 years of experience in the Grand Forks educational community. Specializing in the science of cognitive performance, she brings deep expertise in brain learning processes, self-regulation, and critical thinking. Her work centers on empowering students to master complex material through concept mapping, time management, and GRIT-based resilience techniques.
Valeria plays a key role in the academic pipeline at the University of North Dakota, serving as a instructor for the Pre-Matriculation program and a Patient-Centered Learning (PCL) facilitator for the medical program. These roles leverage her background in health sciences education to help incoming medical students transition into high-stakes environments. For over 25 years, she has also been a presenter, delivering workshops on learning strategies across various academic and professional programs.
Her professional foundation includes five years as a high school physical sciences teacher and 20 years as a Tutor Coordinator. Valeria holds a B.S. in Physical Science Education and a Master of Education from UND. Originally from southeast Minnesota, she has spent the last quarter-century dedicated to fostering self-directed, lifelong learners in the Upper Midwest.
