Program Overview

The home SMHS campus works with ROME sites to ensure ROME students earn appropriate credit for training in the ROME community.

Credit Hours

20 to 24 weeks during Phase 2.

Credit is grants for Family Medicine, OBGYN, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine at all ROME sites. Surgery credit is granted at all sites except Devils lake (due to lack of full-time general surgeon in Devils Lake at this time. Should a general surgeon become available in Devils Lake, there is a chance that the ROME experience in Devils Lake would be lengthened to incorporate credit for General Surgery).

Planning Session

Prior to or during the first week with a new preceptor, an orientation meeting should occur between the student, the site coordinator and the identified preceptor(s) to discuss your educational needs and expectations for the forthcoming weeks. Completion of the Learner Contract, including weekly review, may assist in monitoring progress or pursuing necessary changes. Review progress, using both the learner contract and the student evaluation form, midway through and at the end of each clinical rotation.

Other issues for discussion include:

  1. Expectations for case presentations, plus patient evaluation and management responsibilities
  2. The preceptor's approach to:
    1. Health care
    2. Interaction with the health care system
    3. Continuing education
    4. Community responsibilities
  3. The daily patient schedule for the clinic and hospital
  4. The on-call schedule (every third night is the accepted norm)
  5. Allotted time to study and complete research (allow one-half day per week)
  6. Set time and expectations for mid-clerkship formative evaluation
