Faculty Development Examples

Faculty development at UND SMHS is defined as any planned activity for the ongoing enhancement of a faculty member's knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in areas considered essential to their academic (teaching and research/scholarly activity) and/or clinical performance. Faculty development activities address the multiple roles and needs of the faculty member as facilitator, teacher, advisor, mentor, clinician and researcher. Certainly many activities can be considered to be "faculty development" activities because numerous opportunities exist to meet individual faculty member professional needs and aspirations.

For our purposes, "faculty development" included any participation in verifiable activities (face-to-face, online, blended [face-to-face combined with online elements], self-initiated/self-paced) on any topics that contribute to the enhancement/growth of your knowledge, skills, techniques, awareness or behaviors as an educator, scientist and/or clinician. The following are some examples - certainly not an exhaustive list:

  • Attendance at (not necessarily presentation at):
    • Faculty Orientations
    • Local, regional, national, international conferences
    • Professional development institutes/programs
    • Workshops
    • Courses or other academic studies
    • Seminars
    • Webinars
    • Brown-bag lunches
  • Continuing medical education activities
  • Completion of mandatory training programs/modules
  • Participation in mentoring programs as a mentor or mentee
  • Participation as a chair/member of a study section
  • Participation as a chair/member of an accreditation team
  • Peer review activities
  • Serving on/leading Committees
  • Writing and administering grants
  • Collaborating with colleagues from other institutions
  • Designing and facilitating faculty/professional development program
