Guidelines and Best Practices For Appointing and Mentoring Postdocs and Grad Students
Appointments
Faculty seeking postdoctoral researchers are welcome to share open positions with their professional networks, post positions on relevant job sites, and share via departmental social media sites, and so on.
We encourage the use of the UND Careers website to post your position.
Our office hosts a bi-annual recruiting event to support faculty in recruiting top postdoc talent across the nation. If you are interested in being included, please let us know at catherine.brissette@UND.edu.
You are also encouraged to connect with potential candidates through less formal pathways: conversations at conferences, direct outreach from an interested graduate, or by reaching out to grad students listed on publications in your field of study.
Mentoring
Across all disciplines and fields of study, quality mentoring is an essential component of training and retaining graduate students. Quality mentoring increases retention of graduate students, timely completion of degree, and student satisfaction with their graduate experience. Quality mentoring is also a key component of healthy, productive research and clinical environments. What is quality mentoring? Every mentoring relationship is different, but good mentoring centers around core behaviors including effective communication, aligning expectations, and promoting professional development.
Do you have questions about mentoring? We are here to help with:
- Links to free resources, including mentoring guides and mentoring compacts.
