FAQs

Will this course be taught as an online course or in-person?

The Data Science Academy is an online course taught in real time.  Instruction and course content will be accessed using Zoom and the UND learning management system.

Who can apply?

Any  student in good academic standing with their Tribal College may enroll in this course.  We will contact your college advisor or mentor to verify.

When will I be notified of my acceptance into the course?

Applicants will be notified of acceptance status within two weeks of course registration.

Who teaches the course?

The teaching faculty for this course are professors from Tribal Colleges and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Do I need any special preparation for this course?

There are no pre-requisites.  Although, a previous course in college algebra will be helpful.

How much does it cost?

There are no costs or fees to participate in the Data Science Academy.

Will I need to have my own computer and special software to participate?

You will need access to a computer (not a tablet or mobile phone) with a webcam and reliable internet connection to participate.  The computer will need to have at least 4 GB of RAM.

The broadband connection speed will need to be at least 10 Mbps for downloads and 5 Mbps upload capability.  We will be using Google docs and Microsoft Office365 software throughout the course.

Do I have to take any tests or quizzes to pass the course?

There are no tests or quizzes in this course.  However, participation in all 10 modules over the two weeks is expected.  The knowledge and skills you gain throughout the course will be assessed through discussion, polling questions, and practice exercises.

What can I do with what I learn in this course?

The Data Science Academy is designed to introduce you to the essentials of data science.  You will gain the confidence necessary to work effectively with data using various programming tools and techniques in your college courses.  What you learn in this course will also help you determine whether you wish to pursue further academic training and opportunities in the rapidly expanding field of data science.

Will I receive a certificate as proof for completing this course?

You will receive a personalized certificate of completion for completing the Data Science Academy.

Is there an incentive for participation and completion?

Students will receive a payment of $500 upon satisfactory participation and completion of the Data Science Academy.
