Application

Thank you for your interest in the Family Medicine Residency Program and the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences. All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications submitted though any other sites will not be reviewed.

**Application Deadline: November 1st of Each Year**

Application Requirements

U.S. Allopathic & Osteopathic Candidates:

  • Eligibility for licensure in North Dakota.
  • Graduates of medical schools disapproved by the North Dakota Board of Medicine will not be considered.
  • U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or COMLEX transcript.
    • Applicants must pass USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (CK) by the second attempt.
    • Clinical experience (minimum of four months).
    • Three letters of recommendation from physicians familiar with the applicant's clinical knowledge and skills. At least one must be a clinical supervisor.
  • Personal statement including the applicant's major reason for choosing family medicine as a career, what the applicant is looking for in a training program, and a description of his or her career goals.
  • Time interval since completion of formal training (medical school or residency) must be within seven years.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Medical student performance evaluation (MSPE) and Dean's Letter.
  • A criminal background check before starting residency.

International Candidates:

  • Eligibility for licensure in North Dakota.
  • Graduates of medical schools disapproved by the North Dakota Board of Medicine will not be considered.
  • Applicants must pass USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (CK) by the first attempt.
  • Clinical experience (minimum of four months).
  • Three letters of recommendation from physicians familiar with the applicant's clinical knowledge and skills. At least one must be a clinical supervisor.
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification for international medical graduates by June 1st of each new academic year.
  • Citizenship, permanent residency, or ability to obtain a J-1 or H-1B visa.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Personal statement including the applicant's major reason for choosing family medicine as a career, what the applicant is looking for in a training program, and a description of his or her career goals.
  • Time interval since completion of formal training (medical school or residency) must be within five years.
  • Excellent written and spoken English language communication skills.
  • A criminal background check before starting residency.
