Payroll Instructions

  • Are you legally authorized to work in the United States?
  • Have you been employed by the University of North Dakota in the last 12 months?

If you answer no to any of the above questions, please submit a UND I-9 application to the Department of Basic Sciences.

In order to receive compensation for your research activities this summer, please follow these instructions:

Required Hiring Documentation

If you have not worked for UND in the previous year, you must fill out the I-9 form and a "red packet." The I-9 form is required by UND for employment and must be filled out in the presence of Payroll Assistant Jennifer Hershey*. Originals of Acceptable Documents are required. DO NOT submit these forms electronically on your own or you will not be eligible for compensation.

Host Departmental Administrative Contracts

Be sure to contact the appropriate administrative person to make an appointment prior to your arrival.

For those who will be off campus, the Department of Basic Sciences will serve as your host department. Be sure to complete the I-9 and the red packet before leaving Grand Forks.

Once the red packet has been submitted and you begin your employment, it is your responsibility to carefully record your time. There are two pay periods each month. The pay periods are the 1st of the month through the 15th, and the 16th through the last day of the month.

  • Time sheets: It is imperative that your time sheets are handed to your administrative person on time. Time sheet instructions
  • KRONOS: The Department of Basic Sciences uses KRONOS, an electronic timekeeping system. An administrative assistant in the Department of Basic Sciences will give you a quick tutorial on KRONOS.

Terms of Employment

REMS will support up to eight weeks of summer research experience under the direction of faculty members at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) or offsite locations when approved by the program director. Participants will be compensated at the rate of $10 per hour based on a 40-hours-per-week training experience. Overtime is not allowed. You must take and sign out for at least a 30-minute break if you work four or more hours in one day.

  • Students will be expected to work full time on their respective research project, read scientific literature relevant to the project and to participate in laboratory research meetings.
  • Each student is required to present a poster at the annual Frank Low Research Symposium at the School of Medicine & Health Sciences typically held in April of the year following the REMS project. It is recommended that you begin preparation of your presentations prior to final completion of the eight-week project.
  • All student participants are required to complete the post-research experience survey following completion of the program. Please submit the completed survey to the program director.
  • All presentations, published abstracts and/or publications arising from the student project must be reported to the program director for inclusion in the UND SMHS database.
