Alumni Spotlight Series: Sunita Thapa
Meet Sunita Thapa. She is a recent graduate from the University of North Dakota Master of Public Health program. Currently, she is working as a Health Policy Analyst at the Department of Health Policy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She loves her current job! She explains, “This position is exactly what I was looking for. I am very optimistic that I am in a right trajectory of my career.” Her primary responsibility is to analyze health policy. She is also involved with analyzing Medicare claims data.
The Public Health program at UND helped prepare Sunita for her current job. In fact, she had already accepted her job a month before graduation. She explains that the M.P.H. program exposed her to the field of analytics and provided her with a foundation to become a data analyst due to UND’s advanced and structured curriculum. Sunita believes that the M.P.H. program gave her the platform she needed to learn and master the skills necessary for her current job, especially the skill of programming. Sunita took many different courses in her graduate program that helped her in her current career, including Biostatistics, Research Methods, Data Mining, Healthcare Systems, and GIS. Many other courses such as System Dynamics, Social Behavior, and Epidemiology gave her the foundation to think logically and empirically.
Sunita’s future is very bright. She wants to become a data scientist. She will achieve this goal through work experience or through additional education. She also wants to work for a public health related organization that contributes globally, such as the CDC. Working with a global organization would allow her to make contributions to Nepal, her home country. Sunita is very focused on her career and with her big aspirations she is sure to be very successful!
