Imaging Core

COVID-19

The Imaging Core is instituting new policies designed to minimize person-to-person contact and to maintain a safe environment for users and staff. If you have questions, please contact Sarah Abrahamson or Bryon Grove.

This facility at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences provides advanced instrumentation for researchers interested in investigating biological processes at the cellular, sub-cellular and molecular level.

The light and electron microscopic facilities, complete with ancillary support equipment, are located in close proximity to each other within a suite of rooms housed in the medical school.

The facility is supported by funds from NIH grant P20GM113123, DaCCoTA CTR NIH grant U54GM128729, and UNDSMHS funds.  It is required that users of the Imaging Core facility and/or staff assistance will acknowledge use of the facility in published work according to the policy outlined in the imaging center policies.

Light Microscopy Core (Suite W162)

The light microscopy suite is equipped with a Zeiss LSM 510 META confocal and FCS system, an Olympus FV1000MPE multiphoton/single photon microscope system for intravital imaging, an Olympus IX83 microscope system with cellTIRF, a Nikon Eclipse TE300 fluorescent microscope, and a Nikon Eclipse 80i fluorescent microscope.  The suite has a cell culture room available for users to prepare their samples at a more convenient location to the microscopes.  The facility also has a stand alone workstation computer which has multiple softwares installed to perform image analysis; including FIJI, Imaris, and Huygens Essentials.

Electron Microscopy Core (Suite W162)

This electron microscopy facility provides state-of-the art powerful scanning and transmission electron microscopic capabilities, necessary for examining cellular and extracellular ultrastructure biological samples at the molecular level of resolution. The suite houses a Hitachi 7500 TEM and a Hitachi 4700 field emission SEM dedicated for biological samples.  The suite is equipped with a full array of light and electron microscopic sectioning instrumentation including two RMC MTX ultramicrotomes equipped with Diatome diamond knives, and a Leica RM 2125 paraffin microtome. Preparation equipment for scanning electron microscopy include two Denton Desk II gold/palladium sputter coaters, and one Denton Desk II TSC platinum turbo sputter coater. A Denton DV502 carbon vacuum evaporator is also available.
