5-Year Renewal of INMED NEUROscience Project
The Department of Biomedical Sciences within the University of North Dakota's School of Medicin & Health Sciences has secured a 5-year renewal for their INMED: NEUROscience project. The funding is from NIH-NINDS through 2026 and totals $517,800.
Indians Into Medicine: Native Educator University Research Opportunity, a collaboration between the INMED and Biomedical Sciences Departments at UND, is an 8-week professional development program for high school science teachers in tribal schools. Its goal is to provide research experience in biomedical science, while also providing science, technology, engineering, & mathematics (STEM) pedagogy training. This summer research experience is for middle and high school teachers in American Indian tribal schools. This professional development program is focused on understanding the process of science and translating it into relevant science pedagogy. The program aims to build teachers’ capacity to create engaging, and meaningful learning environments that excite, support, and instill confidence in American Indian students, in an effort to help them overcome some of the obstacles they face on the path to becoming STEM professionals.
The program has 2 principle investigators (PIs). Sarah Sletten, Ph.D., an associate Professor with UND's Biomedical Sciences Department, will be directing the program from initial recruitment, to instructor development content and delivery, all the way through program evaluations. Holly Brown-Borg, Ph.D., a Chester Fritz Distinguished professor also with UND's Biomedical Sciences Department, will coordinate the program's research lab placement component. They will collaborate with Donald Warne, M.D., director of the UND School of Medicine & Health Science's Indians into Medicine program, who will be participating in STEM education content creation and development. Also vital to the success of this program are INMED staff who assist with recruitment and programming.
