Geiger and Chen Receive $2.2 Million NIH/NIMH Grant
Drs. Jonathan Geiger and Xuesong Chen of the UND School of Mecine & Health Sciences' Biomedical Sciences Department have been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) in the amount of 2.2 million dollars. The title of the research project is "Tat endolysome escape and HAND."
This research is relevant to public health, because the long-term survival of HIV-1 infected individuals (due to combined antiretroviral therapy) is accompanied by a high prevalence of HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). The proposed studies are focused to determine the molecular mechanisms by which Tat escapes endolysosomes and the extent to which the Tat endolysosome escape contributes to neuronal injury. The results are expected to provide us with new targets and rationale for preventative and therapeutic interventions against HAND. Thus, the outcome of the proposed studies could have a substantial impact economically, socially and clinically.
